La Triste Historia - Spiritual beings

The ‘Nagual Hummingbird’s who surround the lovers represent the onset of war in Mexican folklore.  The ‘Coyote’ is the trickster and the ‘Butterfly’, the spirits of the fallen. The Nagual spirit animals are rich with vivid colours and baroque patterning to match with the deathly elements of the film.  They act as precursors and figurative elements of the themes that run through the film; with their own skeletal death passes adding an eerie sense of foreboding and beauty all at once.
